Julia hackathon

less than 1 minute read

Published:

This week, I attended the 9th edition of the Julia hackathon. The attendees were the usual suspects from Mainz and Zürich, with a couple of fresh faces from elsewhere as well. I mostly worked on integrating JustPIC.jl into my own code DEDLoc and rethinking the way I compute numerical errors. Click here to find out more about the biannual hackathon.

Visit at the University of Leeds

Published:

I visited the University of Leeds for 2 days and gave a seminar on thermal runaway and deep-focus earthquakes. Afterwards, I had a lot of very nice discussions with the earthquake and volcano deformation researchers at the insitute.

teaching

Applied Geophysics 2017 and 2018

Student assistant, B.Sc. Practical, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, 2017

I prepared exercises and wrote Matlab scripts to generate different versions with different numbers and compute the solutions. We used the platform Ilias to post and control the exercises.

Hydrogeology 2018

Student assistant, B.Sc. Practical, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, 2018

I prepared exercises and exam tasks

Dynamics of the Lithosphere 2019 and 2020

Seminar leader, M.Sc. Seminar, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, 2019

I prepared tasks and gave the seminar where the solutions were discussed. This included exercises, paper discussions, and presentations. This class took place in person in 2019 and online in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There were about 15 students each year.

Geophysical Modeling 2020/2021

Teaching assistant, M.Sc. Seminar, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, 2020

This class introduced students to basics in Linux systems and programming in Julia. The main goal is an introduction to thermomechanical modeling with LaMEM. I helped students with their semester modeling projects. The class took place online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There were about 12 students.

Introduction to Thermomechanical Modeling

Seminar leader, M.Sc./Ph.D. Seminar, University of Bayreuth, 2023

This was a voluntary class for two PhD students and a few Master students which I intitiated. It included lectures on the blackboard about numerical modeling, continuum mechanics, and coding exercises for thermal diffusion and rheology in Julia.
